Winnipeg has largest Indigenous population in Canada

About 93,000 people in Winnipeg identify themselves as First Nations, Metis or Inuit.

WINNIPEG, Man.-What Canadian city has the largest Indigenous population? According to a recent report from Statistics Canada, Winnipeg has the largest number with 92,810 people who identify themselves as First Nations, Metis or Inuit.

Edmonton has 76,205, Vancouver, 61,460 and Toronto, Canada's largest city, has 46,315.

According to the CBC News, Thunder Bay, Ontario has the highest proportion with 12.7 percent of its overall population. Winnipeg is second with 12.2, and Saskatoon takes third place with 10.9 percent of their total population.

Between 2006 and 2016, Canada's Indigenous population more than doubled in seven metropolitan areas. Winnipeg wasn't included among them.

St. John's led the way with a 237.3 percent Indigenous growth rate while Halifax came in second with 199 percent and Moncton with 197.9. Regina, Winnipeg and Saskatoon had the slowest growth rates.

Across Canada, there were 1,673,785 Indigenous people in 2016, which means that was 4.9 percent of the total population. That was up 3.8 percent more than in 2006 and 2.8 percent in 1996.
