A Walk in the Woods

As soon as the sun shines warm once more

I put on my boots and run out the door!

Dad yells “Hold on!” I stop and wait.

Old Shep barks. Dad opens the gate.

The earth is refreshed and springing ahead.

God’s waking up everything, out of its bed.

After the rain on a path through the forest,

Hear the birds singing! A springtime chorus!

The geese are returning, soaring high.

I hear lambs, in their pen nearby.

Spider web’s lace is holding rain drops

That sparkle and glisten through the tree tops.

Shimmering green, new leaves on the trees.

Dropping warm rain, as they fall with the breeze.

Balancing steps on slippery logs,

Down at the creek, hearing new frogs.

Follow the trail, jump over the rocks.

Can’t wait till I take off my boots and socks!

Always make time to have a light snack

That Mama has lovingly put in my pack.

After we sit and talk for a spell…

Dad looks around and then he says, “Well,

Think we should head back. There’s chores to be done.

It’s way after three, we started at one.”

Old Shep runs ahead, the trail he knows best.

Until we catch up, he takes a short rest.

I shake off the drops that plopped from the trees…

Mama won’t mind, I have mud on my knees.

I love each walk in springtime we take

How the earth comes alive! All the memories we make.

A walk in the woods, getting dirty and wet!

Spring is here, the best season yet!
